Update April 1, 2026
You’ll notice some changes on your most recent Steve’s Real Food ingredient panel.
Our Steve’s Real Food Original Recipes have always been formulated for both cats and dogs. We are in the process of redefining our lines and making Steve’s Real Food Original Recipes dog-specific, since our Quest Cat Food line caters exclusively to cats.
As we work to reformulate our new, custom supplement mixes, this is our interim solution to get our products back in stock and ensure our food is available to pet parents who count on us.
An updated temporary ingredient list is stickered or printed on each bag or box for full transparency. We’ve chosen to add a tried-and-true, thoroughly tested vitamin pack to restart our production. This pack is used in a variety of commercial raw diets on the market. It is a temporary addition to our foods as we complete the process of redeveloping our whole food-based supplement blend. We still believe in the power of real food, and this isn’t a change in our priorities or values.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the vitamin pack synthetic?
A: The vitamin pack added to our formulas does include some synthetic ingredients. Every product will have an updated ingredient list printed or stickered on the packaging for full transparency. You can also find these ingredient list updates on each product page of our website.
Q: Are synthetic vitamins bad for my pet?
A: No, properly formulated vitamin packs that include synthetics are perfectly safe for your pet. It’s the same as us humans taking a daily multivitamin when we aren’t consuming the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. The vitamin pack temporarily included in our formulas is a tried-and-true premix used in a variety of commercial raw pet foods. This particular pack has undergone rigorous testing to ensure that vitamin and mineral levels are appropriate and safe.
Q: Which products will include the vitamin pack?
A: All Steve’s Real Food and Quest Cat Food products currently in production will include this vitamin pack and the packaging will show it clearly.
Q: Does the vitamin pack contain rosemary?
A: Steve’s Real Food and Quest Cat Food freeze-dried diets do contain rosemary extract as a natural preservative. The frozen diets do not contain rosemary extract. All packaging and our website have the full, updated ingredient list for reference.
Q: When will the new formulas be ready without the vitamin pack?
A: It takes a lot of time to source high-quality ingredients in the amount we need and to complete multiple rounds of nutrient testing. We expect to start producing our products using the updated, whole food-based supplement mix within the next few months.
Q: Are your formulas changing?
A: The only change is the addition of the vitamin pack. All the original ingredients you’ve come to know and love, like human-quality meat and raw goat milk, remain the same, and our Steve’s Real Food Original Recipes continue to be an 80/15/5 BARF formulation.
Q: Is the food still complete and balanced for all life stages?
A: Some formulas are currently labeled for maintenance (for adult dogs or cats), while others remain “all life stages.” The nutritional adequacy statement can be found on the packaging or on our website for each formula. Our goal is to return to formulating formulas for all life stages (except White Fish Recipe, which will remain a supplemental food).
