When Jasper was a puppy he suffered from IBS, he would consistently have loose stools. Our vet had told our family that he would most likely be on a special prescription dry food diet and medication for IBS the rest of his life.
I had met Jasper when he was around 1 yr old and was told this from my family members. It was the first time I ever heard of such a thing and said to myself, “there has to be a better solution.” No dog this young should be on a medicated diet the rest of his life. The sadder part was that that specific prescription food & medicine didn’t fix his problem, it just patched it up like a bandaid, never getting to the root cause of his symptoms.
So I decided to do some research and discovered the raw food diet for dogs. The more I read about it the more it made sense.
I didn’t live with Jasper at the time, so I had told my family about what I’ve learned, in hopes that it would convince them to make a change in his diet.
They were uncertain at first but did listen to what I had to say & decided to do home cooking. That was working out fine but we then discovered we weren’t balancing his meals properly.
One day while I was in town I decided to bite the bullet and buy him some raw food, first to see if he’d like it. Turns out he loved it! However the one I had gotten him didn’t fully agree with his stomach, there was still an imbalance somewhere.
So I went back to the store to ask more questions. I was originally looking for a brand I had found in a raw store back in NY but couldn’t find it in Florida. Then they then turned me to Steve’s Real Food. I have never heard of the brand before, so I looked into it. Not only did it have ingredients I can pronounce, but the meat came from quality farms & the food came in patty form making it easy to serve.
I decided to give it a shot, we started him off with the chicken patties, and after a week or 2 of feeding him Steve’s Real Food, Jasper’s loose stools had basically vanished!
We were all amazed at how a simple transition can make a huge difference!
Switching him over to Steve’s was the best thing we ever could have done for him. I’m glad I did my research and I’m grateful for the people at the food store who had recommended Steve’s to me. It turned out to be the right balance of meat, organs & bone for him.
Today Jasper is almost 5yrs old & hasn’t had an IBS issue in 3 years! He will never need, or go back to any “special medicated/prescription diet” ever again!
Not only that but his teeth are cleaner, his coat is softer & shinier, and he is still very active! A lot of people think he’s much younger than what he is. The best part is his vet always tells us how healthy he looks since we’ve switched his food over!
