Here is a letter that came to us from Eagle, Wisconsin. Not only is diet important for maintaining health, but as Janis’s letter shows, diet can be a valuable tool for overcoming disease and illness. “I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you what a tremendous difference your dog food has made for […]

Nutrition’s Role in Senior Pets

Senior Dog

Most people can expect around a dozen years with their companion, as the average age at death is around 12.5. Smaller dogs generally have longer lives than their larger cousins, with some giant breeds rarely making it to double digits. Still, the record books have dogs living twice as long. One of the oldest living dogs is a 27-year-old Australian Cattle Dog, a bull terrier mix named “Jerry” who lived with his family in the Australian outback. When his family was asked what they believe contributed to his longevity, they replied “his raw diet of outback wildlife”.

The 4 types of Veterinarians

Like human medicine, there are numerous specialty fields in Veterinary medicine, such as Nutrition, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Cardiology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, etc. These veterinarians complete their four years of veterinarian school, followed by a four-year residency program. They then face a grueling two-day board exam. This elite group of specialists will have an extra letter after their DVM degree that is associated with their specialty field. They are usually part of the AVMA or the AHVMA, along with their specialty association.

Prebiotics and Probiotics

The difference between pre- and pro-biotics. Pre-biotics are, essentially, a type of fiber that feeds the healthy gut bacteria (probiotics) in our digestive tract. So the Prebiotics are the fuel, and the probiotics are the car if you will. Prebiotics are fibrous materials that do fermented-foodsnot digest in the stomach but pass undigested to the gut, where probiotics feed on them and use them for fuel.

How to Transition Your Cat to a Raw Diet

Cat at trade show

If you’ve ever tried to switch your cat’s food, you know it’s not as simple as swapping out one bowl for another. Cats can be incredibly stubborn when it comes to their diets—especially if they’ve spent most of their lives eating kibble. In fact, transitioning cats to raw food is often more challenging than transitioning dogs, largely because cats are creatures of habit. They tend to imprint on the food they were raised on, and anything unfamiliar can feel like a threat.

But don’t worry—if your cat is turning their nose up at raw food, you’re not alone. With a little patience (and a lot of trial and error), even the pickiest feline can be gently guided toward a healthier, species-appropriate diet. Below are some tried-and-true tips gathered from pet parents who’ve been in your shoes.

Food Habits of Feral Carnivores: A Review of Stomach Content Analysis

A good deal of disagreement exists within the veterinary profession about the proper diet for dogs, some nutritionists advocating meat and fat rations and questioning the need for carbohydrates, and others describing a necessity for carbohydrates and suggesting deleterious effects from high meat protein diets. The proliferation of commercial dog food products and the hyperbolic television advertising associated with them have compounded the dilemma for the veterinarian and the dog-owning public.
