How Much to Feed

Each four-legged friend will metabolize food differently based on their activity level, breed, age, etc. Use our feeding calculator as a starting point for your pet, and adjust the feeding amount as necessary to help your pet achieve an ideal body weight.

Food Storage Instructions

Keep the bag sealed and away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid storing freeze-dried pet food in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations, such as garages or sheds. Freeze-dried food is sensitive to moisture. Ensure the storage area has low humidity levels to prevent the food from becoming soggy or molding. While freeze-dried dog food has a longer shelf life than other pet foods, it’s essential to use it within a reasonable timeframe. Follow the “best by” or “use by” date on the packaging as a guideline.

Safe Handling Raw Pet Food

Treat raw pet food with the same care as handling raw meat for your consumption. Always wash your hands, pet bowls, and any surfaces that come into contact with the raw food.

Freeze Dried beef FAQ

How big are the bags of freeze-dried food?

Our original freeze-dried diets are available in 1.25 lb (20 oz) bags and makes 5 pounds of food once it’s rehydrated.

Yes. You should always rehydrate freeze-dried food before feeding it to your dog or cat as a meal. While a few nuggets fed dry as treats are fine, moisture is necessary for proper digestion. If you don’t rehydrate the meal before your pet eats it, it will absorb the water in their gut, which could dehydrate your dog or cat. Feeding dry in large amounts can lead to discomfort, constipation, or, in severe cases, intestinal blockage.

Hot water is easy and works well, but other great options to enhance the meal are low-sodium bone broth, raw goat milk, or kefir. Note: If you are rehydrating with a cold or thick liquid, such as kefir, the rehydration will take much longer.

The food has an unopened shelf life which is typically 18 to 24 months. After opening, if the product is package is closed and stored in a cool dark area (like a cupboard) it will stay good for up to 12 months.

Is ground beef good for dogs?

Yes, ground beef is a great source of protein and essential fatty acids. Ground beef alone is not a complete diet for pets, but it has been properly balanced and tested in Steve’s Real Food beef diet.

Yes, a dog’s digestive tract is designed to handle RAW beef bones, but cooked bones should never be fed due to the potential for the bones to split and cause digestive upset or injury. Any chew or bone should be given under supervision.

Yes, beef liver is a vitamin-rich food that can be given to dogs. Liver contains copper, iron, and zinc. Beef liver is also included in Steve’s Real Food Beef diet.

No, the freeze-drying process that removes the moisture makes the food shelf stable. Freeze-dried dog food can be stored in a cupboard.

First time trying any Steve’s pet food products. Freeze dried beef, Mini Dox loves it! Almost finished with first bag and he still loves it. At almost 8 years old his energy and overall health are noticeably improved to near puppy levels. I will continue to feed him Steve’s products and without hesitation would recommend the product!

I have been adding the Beef to my Great Dane’s (Percy) kibble for over a year and he turned 3 Aug 20th……He loves it and he’s the perfect example of a “House Pony” at 128lbs!!!!

LIFE CHANGING! I can’t say enough reasons why I love Steve’s freeze dried recipes. Ofcourse it’s super convenient and easy to feed your dog a nutritious meal, but my dog ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT! I have a very difficult dog when it comes to food. He has been on raw food most of his life, a few months ago he started to lose interest in his raw and hated meal time. He would refuse to eat, to the point that he wouldn’t eat for days at a time. The more time past the more I got worried and had to make a change. That’s when Steve’s freeze dried food stepped in. It was the first time, in a long time, I saw my dog finish his bowl! I couldn’t be a happier dog mom. Every time it’s time for his meal, he gets excited to eat and devours his bowl. After that big scare, it brings me to tears seeing him enjoying food again. When I walk in the house from the pet store with bags of Steve’s his tail is always wagging so happy and so excited. It’s honestly the best feeling in the world. I’m so grateful for this food. I highly recommend Steve’s freeze dried to parents with picky dogs. It helped me get my boy back!

Game changer!! Always traveling can be difficult with raw fed dogs. But this freeze dried takes all that away!! They still get to be raw and we still get to travel!!

  5. Chelsea

I was blown away by the changes I saw in my dogs after switching to raw food. My 2yr old had been fed kibble for the first 1.5 of her life. The first thing I noticed was her poop- super healthy, not stinky, and not causing her to scoot. After we’d been feeding raw for a while I noticed I hadn’t heard her sneezing since we switched! This food really helped her allergies 🙂 as a trainer the freeze dried raw nuggets work wonderfully as training treats too! They crumble perfectly and the whole food ethically sourced ingredients… it doesn’t get much better than that! My dog is also obsessed with the food- it’s the highest value reward! Good for my puppy and the earth! We’ll never stop talking about how much we love Steve’s- it was exactly what we were looking for!

  6. Lindsey

We have been feeding frozen raw for years but the convenience of the freeze dried raw is something that we always have on hand! It’s great for traveling, those days where we forget to thaw the frozen Patties, or just a nice change up in the feeding routine! It’s the same great ingredients and quality but convenient to store in the pantry! Love traveling with this food to feed fresh on the road!

  7. Lillian McKee

I love that we have this option as a food for our girl. We usually go with the raw patties but having these freeze dried nuggets as an option for when we travel, want a high value treat or to sprinkle as a topper are awesome. I love being able to keep on her same food without compromising her sensitive system. I also like being able to send this with her for overnight stays with pet sitters as it’s easier than dealing with raw.

  8. Megan Oswald

I love everything about this food! The ingredients, the way it’s made, and how easy it is to travel with and rehydrate! This is our go to for every trip that we go on and the dogs love it just as much as their regular frozen raw food!

  9. Sheba

These are so perfect for on the go/camping with the pups when I can’t bring raw. Big hits are beef/pork/lamu in our household.

  10. Lindsey

Amazing to travel with! It’s the exact same formula as the frozen, so when traveling, the freeze dried makes it easy to take along when refrigeration is limited. Love Steve’s. It’s the only thing my girl does well on

  11. Ann

Love their recipe especially using whole food ingredients. They make feeding fresh food diet easy and my senior dog loves it
