INGREDIENT SOURCING

Our pork comes from a family farm in Idaho that is USDA-Verified and Certified Sustainable. The hogs are humanely treated and naturally raised. They are fed high-quality western wheat and barley, much of which is grown on the same family farms where the pigs are raised to ensure the best diet possible. The farm never uses preservatives, chemicals, hormones, additives, or added moisture in our fresh pork products.
The produce is sourced from the Pacific Northwest, and our goat milk comes from a family farm in Gaston, Oregon. Steve’s Real Food is committed to working with family farms that share our belief in sustainable farming free from added hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides.

How Much to Feed

Each four-legged friend will metabolize food differently based on their activity level, breed, age, etc. Use our feeding calculator as a starting point for your pet, and adjust the feeding amount as necessary to help your pet achieve an ideal body weight.

Food Storage Instructions

Keep the bag sealed and away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid storing freeze-dried pet food in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations, such as garages or sheds. Freeze-dried food is sensitive to moisture. Ensure the storage area has low humidity levels to prevent the food from becoming soggy or molding. While freeze-dried dog food has a longer shelf life than other pet foods, it’s essential to use it within a reasonable timeframe. Follow the “best by” or “use by” date on the packaging as a guideline.

Safe Handling Raw Pet Food

Treat raw pet food with the same care as handling raw meat for your consumption. Always wash your hands, pet bowls, and any surfaces that come into contact with the raw food.

Freeze-Dried Pork FAQ

How big are the bags of freeze-dried food?

Our original freeze-dried diets are available in 1.25 lb (20 oz) bags and makes 5 pounds of food once it’s rehydrated.

If you are feeding it as the pet’s main diet, YES, it is vitally important to rehydrate the foods before feeding them. To make rehydration easy, we have made our freeze-dried foods soft and easy to crumble. This allows the food to absorb moisture quickly. If you use freeze-dried pet food as a treat, rehydrating is NOT required.

Hot water is easy and works well, but other great options to enhance the meal are low-sodium bone broth, raw goat milk, or kefir. Note: If you are rehydrating with a cold or thick liquid, such as kefir, the rehydration will take much longer.

The food has an unopened shelf life until the expiration date, which is typically 18 months. After opening, we suggest using within 30 days.
What about parasites in pork meat?

The parasite that causes the most concern in pork is a roundworm called Trichinella spiralis, which can cause the disease state trichinosis. It used to be common in the United States, but that was long ago. Fortunately, infections are now quite rare in domestic pork in the US. Legislation changed many years ago, prohibiting feeding raw meat garbage to hogs. Sadly, people used to feed pigs pretty much anything they wanted to get rid of. Today, Trichinella is almost exclusively associated with eating undercooked wild game meat, specifically carnivores and omnivores, like wild boar.

Even though the risk is already very low, we take several steps to ensure our pork diets are clean and safe, starting with sourcing from high-quality family farms that raise free-range pigs fed a species-appropriate diet. Our manufacturing process includes high-pressure processing. This cold-water pressure method effectively eliminates pathogens such as harmful bacteria and parasites. Finally, we freeze the pork to temperatures well below what the CDC recommends for killing trichinella and other parasites.

Yes, dogs can eat pork. When many people think of pork, they think of greasy bacon, which is not healthy for dogs or people. However, we use muscle meat, which is very lean and packed with essential vitamins and minerals; it’s high in protein and one of the lowest percentage fat diets in our lineup. Pork is considered a novel protein, so it may be an excellent option if your dog is intolerant to poultry or beef.

Yes. The bones in our products are RAW and ground to ⅛ inch. The small pieces are bone are easily digested. While a dog’s digestive tract is designed to handle RAW bones, cooked bones should never be fed due to the potential for the bones to splinter and cause digestive upset or injury. Any bone or chew should be given only under supervision.

5 reviews for Freeze-Dried Raw Dog Food Pork Recipe

  1. Jei A

My favorite recipe! Pork is so underrated, and I feel many pet parents are afraid to feed it. If you have a sensitive or allergy dog, feed them pork! It’s packed with omega 3 and amino acids. It’s also a neutral protein which is fantastic for allergy dogs and dogs that run warm. I always buy a variety of proteins, but never leave without multiple bags of pork!

  2. Meaghan White

I love Steve’s freeze dried options! I use them in my dog’s meals, but also as treats! The nuggets break apart super easily, making for the perfect training treat.

  3. Haskiri V

Perfect for training my dogs! They listen so good when I have these in my hands LOL, a must try treat if you’re trying to train your puppy 🙂

  4. Ashley Hensarling

Absolutely love the pork. A couple of my dogs have severe allergies and have done extremely well on the pork. Love the convenience of freeze dried!

  5. Ngan V

We brought a bag of FD pork with us for the dogs during our beach vacation trip. It was our first trip with the dogs, so ease and convenience was key! I’m so glad to have something so minimally processed and nutritious, but also incredibly quick and easy as an option for our future family trips!
